Kate Beckinsale finds it ‘depressing’ that she’s only remembered for Underworld

Kate played vampire Selene in the supernatural film series, which started with Underworld in 2003. It was followed by sequels Underworld: Evolution in 2006 and Underworld: Awakening in 2012. There’s even a new installment on the way, Blood Wars, tipped for release later this year with Beckinsale returning to her leather-clad, butt-kicking, trigger-happy character. As popular (among fans anyway) as the films were, the actress doesn’t want them to be all she’s known for. In an interview with Total Film she confessed: ‘It has lasted pretty well. It’s a little bit depressing that that’s probably what’s going to be on my gravestone.

‘I’m far more comfortable with learning 70,000 words of dialogue. That’s much more in my comfort zone. Whereas jumping off things and doing a roly-poly in leather tights, that’s a bit like, “What the f**k am I doing here still?” ‘It’s always been a hilarious joke to my family that I’ve been allowed to get away with it.’ She added that the only reason she got involved with the second Underworld was because of her relationship to her then-husband, director Len Wiseman.

Kate said: ‘When he did a movie, he’d be tied up for more than two years, and we weren’t ready to have that happen to us. That was 100 percent what that was about.’ Her new film Love & Friendship is as far from Underworld as you could get. The actress stars as Lady Susan Vernon who moves to her in-laws’ estate and tries to play matchmaker for herself and her daughter Frederica.
